Following about a year and a half of Early Access, Duoyi Games released their roguelike first-person shooter RPG mashup Gunfire Reborn onto Steam this past November, where it has been very well-received by players and gone on to sell more than 2 million copies. Now, after initially announcing plans to bring it to mobile during its Early Access period back in December of 2020, this week Duoyi announced that Gunfire Reborn will finally be making its way to mobile devices in the coming months with an expected release date of April 15th.
Gunfire Reborn features 6 playable characters, each with their own unique abilities and attributes. Pick one and head out into a randomized level-based campaign where you take out all manner of randomized baddies who then go on to drop all sorts of randomized loot. This can be done in a solo capacity or with up to 3 friends cooperatively. The hallmark of Gunfire Reborn is its major weapon variety and the ability to augment your character’s abilities based on the weaponry you come across as well as numerous scrolls which offer various passive enhancements. If you imagine a looter shooter such as Borderlands, but in an infinitely replayable roguelike loop, that’s Gunfire Reborn. Here’s the first mobile trailer.
Much like many modern roguelikes, or perhaps roguelites is more accurate, Gunfire Reborn features a persistent progression path in addition to all its randomized elements. The 6 characters become unlocked by way of playing, as do more and more types of weapons and scrolls. There’s also a huge skill tree for you to fill out between runs with the XP earned through playing. And of course, a staple of games like this, is an option to choose from 3 different ability upgrades after successfully completing a level in a run, and so coupled with the different character types and the huge number of weapons and scrolls in the game, you can really go nuts taking any particular character in a basically infinite number of directions.
It should be noted that this will not be a 1:1 port of the PC version, as Duoyi Games have adjusted some elements to make the game more mobile-friendly. This includes auto-fire, aim-assistance, a new UI layout, and a “faster combat flow" as well as an adjusted difficulty level. They mention optimized touchscreen controls but unfortunately there’s no mention of physical controller support. It sounds like the goal is to capture the core essence of the PC version but packaged for mobile play, and I will be curious to see how it all shakes out when the mobile version of Gunfire Reborn launches in April.
