One of the most memorable moments of the entire Jurassic Park/Jurassic World franchise is when Nedry (Wayne Knight) is trying to escape the park and island after stealing dino DNA, and he comes across a dilophosaurus, who spits all over him and eventually eats him. Well, everyone's favorite spitting dinosaur is back, and in the home release of Jurassic World: Dominion, we finally learn how they make the spit.
In one of the special features, titled "Spit Take: The Return of the Dilophosaurus," the cast and crew discuss the iconic spitting dino, which includes some behind the scenes on what the spit is made from and how they shoot it onto the cast.
"This is our main spit substance, a material called methylcellulose, which is a food thickening agent, which they use in milkshakes at your local burger joint," said Chris Clarke, the special effects senior technician on Dominion. "I noticed in the original film, [the dilophosaurus] first spits, and [Nedry] comes and grabs his shirt, and it all strings up. So there's a substance we use in the film industry a lot called 'ultra slime.' And any time you see anything stringy in a film, it's this stuff. It just looks like mucus."
